The UK has a rich legacy of universities of international repute such as the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. With 18 universities among the world’s top 100, UK attracts thousands of students and researchers every year, including many from India seeking to get admission in UK universities. It is the world leader in many areas of education which include engineering, science, business, management, law, finance, art and design. London, the capital city, has been consistently featuring in the top 10 liveable cities of the world for international students. Its reputation and legacy as an epicentre for scientific research make it a sought-after study destination, especially for some of the best thinkers in the world.
There are two student categories under Tier 4 of the points-based system:
Tier 4 (General) Student Visa – This visa category is for students coming to the UK for higher education. The applicant must be at least 16 years old.
Tier 4 (Child) Student Visa – This visa category is for children between 4 and
15 years of age coming to the UK for their education.
Children between 4 and 15 years can only be educated at independent fee-paying schools.
While a normal UK Study Visa could take at least 6 weeks to process, students can opt for the Priority Visa Service or the Super Priority Visa Service to shorten the visa processing time for an added fee. Under the Priority Visa Application, the UK Visas and Immigration aims to make a decision on your Priority Visa application and contact you to let you know that your passport is ready to be collected within 5 working days from when you submit your biometric information. Under the Super Priority Visa Application, the same work is completed within 24 Hrs. Candidates should note that the cost of this service is in addition to the visa application fee and is non-refundable if the visa application is refused, or in exceptional cases if it takes longer to process.
The academic year in the UK runs from September to July. Universities and Colleges in the UK have 3 intakes and some of them may also refer to intake as a term. The 3 intakes available in the UK are:
Intake 1: Term 1 – It commences in September/October and is the major intake
Intake 2: Term 2 – It commences in January/February intake is also available
Intake 3: Term 3 – It commences in May/June and is available for selected Courses.
On Tier 4 Dependent Visa, Your Family members including your dependents and spouse will be able to join you or stay with you in UK during your course of study

Dependent Visa holders can work freely in the UK however they are not allowed to work as a doctor in training. If your dependent spouse is highly skilled and secures sponsorship with a Tier 2 licensed employer on his or her own account please note that they will not be able to ‘switch’ in country to a Tier 2 General Visa.
