Eligibility Criteria of Austalia Study Visa
- Students enrolled in a full-time study course are only eligible to apply for a Student Visa under Subclass 500. Part-time and distance learning courses do not qualify.
- You should be able to convince that you only intend to travel to Australia for studies and would return to your home country at the end of the course or after a few years of experience.
- At the time of the visa application, you should have an Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of your visa.
- Students are required to provide proof of good character which necessarily suggests that you do not have any criminal case against you and/ or you have never been deported from Australia before.
Australia Study Visa Requirements
- The student visa for Australia falls under Subclass 500
- You will be eligible for a student visa only if you wish to pursue a registered course or part of it on a full-time basis.
- Issued an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) certificate – this is to confirm your enrolment in an Australian University.
- Four recent passport-sized photographs
- Certified or notarized copies transcript/document of academic results
- Results of tests in the English language like IELTS, TOEFL, PTE if you are a non-native English speaker
- If applicable, proof of civil status
- Financial Requirements – to get your student visa you must prove that you have the funds to cover your course fees, travel, and living costs.
- Character Requirement – you must submit a certificate to prove you have no criminal record.
- Proof of visa fees payment – proof that you have paid the required visa fees.
- Candidates usually require an overall band score of 6.5 with no component band score below 6 for postgraduate programs and an overall band score of 6.5 with no component band score below
6, for undergraduate programs and some programs like law, laboratory, nursing, etc. have higher IELTS band requirement.
Processing Time for Australia Study Visa
Before you submit your visa application ensure that you meet all the eligibility requirements. The processing time for your visa is usually four weeks. You can apply for the visa 124 days before the start of your course and you can
travel to the country 90 days before the commencement of your course.
If you have any dependents, they can apply for the same Subclass 500 visa. Even if they may not come with you immediately, you must declare your dependents in your visa application. Otherwise, they may not be eligible for a dependent
visa later.
Upcoming Intakes in Australia
Universities in Australia have diverse deadlines for application. However, the two general timelines are broadly applicable:
Intake 1: Semester 1 – It commences in February and is the major intake
Intake 2: Semester 2 – It commences in July intake is also available
Dependents
The dependents also apply under SubClass 500 and pay the additional fee required. You must declare all family members on your visa application at the time of submission, even if they do not plan to travel with you to Australia. If
you do not do this, later on, your family members will not be eligible for the grant of dependent visas to join you in Australia. The partner of the student gets a Dependent Visa and a valid work permit for the same duration as
the primary applicant. This is applicable only for the Master's degree application.
Work Approval for Students
Student Applicant
- Students must be over 18 years of age
- International students in Australia on a valid student visa can work for up to 20 hours per week
- An exception is, working as an academic assistant. There is no limit to how many days academic assistants may work
- They are not allowed to be self-employed or work as freelancers
After graduation students can apply for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). The visa will be granted based on the coursework and the category under which the student has applied
Spouse
In general, spouses are given the same rights as the spouse is already in Australia. Therefore, if the spouse in Australia has the right to work, the spouse who comes to join him or her will also have that right. But also note that
only work permit holders can apply for the dependant visas.
